LeBron James distances himself from infamous 'karma' tweet
The theatrical soap opera that blossomed on 8 July, when LeBron aka King James scorned Cleveland and decided that he was taking his talents to South Beach, took another twist on Wednesday.
Apparently James has decided that the sarcastic tweet, which took the NBA fraternity by storm, was not aimed at his former franchise. Instead, he tried to distance himself from it.
“It was just how I was feeling at the time,'' James said Wednesday, retreating from the backlash the tweet caused during the day. “It wasn't even a comment from me, it was someone who sent it from me and I sent it out -- but like I said, it wasn't towards
that team. It definitely wasn't a good showing by that team last night. I know they wish they played better, but nothing toward them.”
The situation unfolded when James aimed a subliminal comment at his former franchise, while they were still in the process of being handed the worst defeat in their history, at the hands of the ruthless Los Angeles Lakers.
"Crazy. (Karma) Gets you every time. It’s not good to wish bad on anybody. God sees everything!" James tweeted during the fourth quarter of the match, which the Cavs lost by 112-57.
The ‘below the belt’ comments appeared to be a direct jab at Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert, under whom James served for seven years, and propelled the Cavs to new heights.
However, after James announced he was leaving for Miami as a free agent in July, things turned sour between the two. The morning following James’ departure, an infuriated Gilbert wrote a scathing letter to the Cleveland fans. In it he questioned James' character,
accused him of quitting on the team during the playoffs and amusingly even put a curse on LeBron, writing that, “James will unfortunately own this dreaded spell and bad karma.”
These weren’t the ramblings of an adolescent, rather those of an NBA franchise owner. The diatribe was so outrageous that the NBA fined him heavily for it. It is only surprising that James waited so long to reply. While the two of them have openly claimed
that they have moved on from the infamous saga, the tweet quite evidently showed that James is still bitter with his former employer.
The war is even lingering at the hotels. The Cavs and the Heat incidentally checked into the same Los Angeles hotel as part of their respective road trip itineraries. The Cleveland outfit was in town to play the Lakers on Tuesday, and Miami were there to
face the Clippers on Wednesday.
The Cavs instigated the six-month long row again, when they decided to lodge into another hotel rather than share a building with their mortal enemy. James responded with a poisoned arrow. He however, denied that was the case.
"It wasn't no hit at that franchise, no hit at that team, especially those players at all,'' he said. "I've moved on and hopefully that organisation is continuing to move on, but I'm happy where I am as a Miami Heat player.''
James' tweet though caused shockwaves in Cleveland, where fans still feel deluded by him ditching them. It's bad enough the Cavs are struggling, but James decided to kick them when they're down. James said, "Everyone looks into everything that I say. Everybody
looked too far into it.''
James also insisted that he's used the word ‘karma’ throughout his life. "Where I come from and my background I've always kind of used that to not take things for granted ever,'' he said. "We all know how strong of a word it is.''
