LeBron James says he doesn't deserve to be Time Person of the Year
If you asked Clevelanders whether LeBron James deserves to be under consideration for Time magazine’s Person of the Year, the answer would likely be a resounding no. But for the man who
enraged Clevelanders by announcing his departure from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Miami Heat via a one-hour television special on ESPN, he doesn’t think he deserves the annual designation either, as he made clear to reporters after practice on Monday 15
November.
"That's just crazy," James said of being one of the final 25 candidates for the award.
Notables who are also part of the final 25 include U.S. President Barack Obama, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Lady Gaga, Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck, Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Turkish
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, as well as the 33 Chilean miners who spent more than two months underground before being rescued in a story that got headlines around the world. James said he doesn’t belong amongst these names.
"What those guys did, the courage and what they stood for, I should be nowhere near that list. Nowhere near it."
The award, which has been given out since 1927, goes to a person, group, or thing that "for better or for worse, ...has done the most to influence the events of the year,” according to
Time.
Perhaps realizing that he could have better handled this summer’s move to Miami, James reportedly seemed embarrassed at the news. He expressed his desire to improve as a person, as well
as a basketball player.
"I am who I am and I think I'm in a position of my life where I'm going to get better every day. But it's too much," he said of the award.
James and Chris Bosh joined Dwyane Wade in Miami over the summer and currently hold a disappointing record of 6-4 on the season.
