Lea river ready for London Olympics 2012
The revival of the Lea in London has recently been completed for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The river was restored as part of the London 2012 Olympic Games promise to deliver the greenest Games that have ever been staged in the history of the Olympics.
The head of design and regeneration for the London Olympic Delivery Authority, Jerome Frost, expressed himself in the following words regarding the regeneration of the river, “For many years, the river Lea was lost. Many people who lived here couldn't tell
you where it was because the land around it was so built up with waste.”
The revival of the Lea came under the restoration of the site that had been marked for use as the Olympic Park. The venue initially was an industrial estate that had become out of use and was used for purposes of dumping garbage. The estate was dominated
by industrial waste as well as abandoned cars and it had reached a point where the piled up garbage was as high as 15 metres above sea level.
In order to restore the area, the Olympic organizers undertook a huge task that cost a total of £1 billion. The project involved removing waste that was equivalent to 1.3 million tonnes. Not only that, a total of 200 buildings were laid to the ground. However,
the material produced from the demolition of the buildings was not treated as waste, rather, 95% of it was reused for the purpose of making new buildings.
The area now boasts of a regenerated Lea running next to the Olympic Park as well as new buildings for the Olympics. Not only that, it also houses the velodrome and the aquatic centre.
The Olympic Park is now ready for the Olympic Games next year. The city of London is hosting the event for the third time in its history. The first time that the Olympic Games came to London was in the year 1908 while the second time it was in 1948, almost
half a century later. The capital of England plans to make the third Olympics the best one yet.
