What would be the steps a pregnant woman or a family with young children should take to reduce the chances of lead leaching into the drinking water, since lead contamination of water is a significant problem in many older buildings?

  1. The safest bet would be to move out.  Otherwise, don't eat paint (shields on corners may help), and DEFINATELY DON"T DRINK HOT WATER FROM THE TAP!!  Hot water will more readily leach lead from the solder holding the pipes together.

  2. You can always buy one of those water purifiers that attaches to most kitchen sinks now.  They supposedly get rid of most of the lead that is in the water.  Do your research though before buying one and see which one gets out the most.

  3. The EPA.GOV  Has Information on their site about Lead Contamination!

    Thanks, RR
