  1. The chemical present that gives leaves their colour is chlorophyll. The function of chlorophyll is to absorb sunlight energy and convert it to chemical energy whcih can be used by the plant in photosynthesis.

    A thick cuticle prevents water being lost from the leaf by transpiration.
