if i get a leaf, with a stem , and place it in water will it be able to take in the water via the stem?

if not plz help me with my work

i have to see wether the size of a leaf(from the same plant) affects the amount of water it loses

i'm thinking of doing it by placing the stem bit of the leaf in a sealed container with water and as the water is taken in by the plants and getting evaporated through the leaf i measure the amount of water left in the container day by day

if you have a better idea of how i could to this experiment please tell me

  1. The stem will taken in the water if placed in as soon as it is cut. You can test it out by coloring the water and checking if the stem changes color. However, take care that there is no scope for the water in the container to evaporate away too.

  2. can;t you use a potomoter? doesn't that measure water loss from leaves??
