League, Players' Association continue Negotiations on Sunday -NHL Lockout Update
The second week of November is almost nearing its end and the National Hockey League (NHL) and Players’ Association are still in the negotiation process without any significant updates up until now.
Parameters of a new collective bargaining agreement came under discussion during their meeting on Sunday, November 11, 2012, and it is not clear as of yet what the 90 minute meeting had in store for both sides in terms of getting a new deal done with.
It is reported that player contracting issues were the most discussed topic during their meeting at the league offices in Manhattan, which just seems to be another day gone by ever since the lockout officially came into force when the previous labour deal
ended on September 15.
"I think it is fair to say while there was a candid discussion on those issues and each side explained their position to the other, I don't think there was any progress on any of those issues," NHL Deputy Commissoner Bill Daly said. "We had substantially
revised our player-contracting proposals over the course of the summer and in the offer we made to the players to save the 82-game season. We had limited them to what we consider very few tweaks to the system that we think will make the system better, will
help us grow revenues in our view and obviously should heighten player salaries over time.”
Prior to this meeting, both sides met a number of times and once for lunch as well, which was rather an informal gathering, but some major progression is yet to be seen. Players and team owners are on the edge as the much anticipated Winter Classic has also
come to an end and it is yet to be deemed whether there will be a regular season at all.
Players share in team revenue is still a major aspect that both sides have not been able to reach a mutual consensus on and without that being taken care of, fans can forget about a deal happening any time soon.
It is expected that both sides will meet again on Monday, this time at the Players’ Association offices in Toronto.
