League, Players Association to meet again on Thursday -NHL Lockout Update
With November 2nd, 2012, set as the prospective deadline by the National Hockey League (NHL) in order to still save an 82-game regular season, both stakeholders are set to meet again this coming Thursday to continue negotiating over a new labour
deal to finish up the lockout.
Some sources are citing the NHL Players’ Association to have gained a lot of hope from the league’s most recent offer about a 50-50 share of revenue and hopefully, just a few tweaks here and there will be able to get the job done for both sides.
"We're focused on getting the puck dropped on Nov. 2 and playing a full 82-game regular-season and full [Stanley Cup] Playoffs," Commissioner Bettman said Tuesday after making the offer during an hour-long bargaining session, according to NHL.com. "That's
what this offer is all about."
In order to keep the process transparent, the league has also made their fresh offer to the Players’ Association, public a day after making it to let the world know what really is going on behind those closed doors.
"We believe this was a fair offer for a long-term deal and it's one that we hope gets a positive reaction so that we can drop the puck on Nov. 2, which backing up entails at least a one-week training camp," Commissioner Bettman added. "So, we have about
nine or 10 days to put this all to bed, signed, sealed and delivered in order for this offer to be effective and for us to move forward.”
All eyes are on the labour union now as the ball is in their court and the next move is to be made by executive director, Donald Fehr, and his team of players. Thursday’s meeting is set for the league’s offices in New York and could bring about some significant
progress in this regard since there are still a number of reservations by the players in terms of revenue share and the long term outlook of the proposed offer.
Updates and developments should be expected after their meeting Thursday as the union and league get together for the second time this week.
