League One play-off semi final – Millwall 2 Huddersfield 0
(Millwall win 2-0 on agg)
Plenty of eyebrows were raised when Millwall boss Kenny Jackett splashed most of club’s season transfer budget on Stevenage striker Steve Morison, £130,000 to be exact. But the prolific Conference striker has transferred his form to League One, emphasising the issue that there is sufficient talent in the depths of non-league football.
The 26-year-old stared once again for Millwall in last night’s surprisingly comfortable 2-0 second leg victory over Huddersfield, netting the all important opener mid-way through the first half. Skipper Paul Robinson headed home in the second half to rubber-stamp the victory, but it was Morison who the fans ran to at the final whistle.
Make no bones about it, the 23-goal striker does not possess an abundance of finesse, but goes about his business whole heartedly and has that all important killer instinct in front of goal.
More of a battering ram, as oppose to a polished diamond, and the bandaged up head wound that he sustained in the first leg was a fitting accessory.
Manager Jackett, who tasted defeat with the Lions in last year’s final, revealed the scars of last season are still fresh in the memory.
He told Skysports: "We were disappointed to lose, you always are in those types of occasions but it is an achievement for everybody at the club to go again and get to this stage."
Asked about opponents Swindon, he replied: "They are a very good side and scored a lot of goals this season so it will be a big test for us.
"But whoever we were going to meet, the standard of League One is such a high standard this year, that we are going to have to really work hard and produce top-class performances to win and Swindon in the final will be exactly the same."
Huddersfield boss Lee Clark, whose side seemed to freeze on the big stage, still believes this season has been a success for his young side.
Clark told Skysports: "You want to get one of the three (promotion) positions, but I feel the club has come on massively in the 18 months, both on and off the pitch.
"We've got a superb group of young players and they'll only get better."
Swindon are next up for Jackett’s side, and Morison has Wembley experience from his FA Trophy days with Stevenage. Two wins and two goals from, you’ve guessed it, two games.
The Robins will need to be on their guard.
