League confirms two additional wild card entries for 2012 – MLB News
Major League Baseball has officially announced the addition of two wild card entries in 2012 season involving extra teams in the playoffs and also to make the postseason more competitive.
The previous eight playoffs’ teams were making and provoking the league into a monopolist culture as from last two to three years, almost same number of teams are competing against each other.
The proposal has been circulated from the MLB authorities to the Players Association for approval since last season. An additional wild card entry will allow a team from National and American League to play in the 2012 postseason.
MLB Commissioner Bud Selig stated on Friday, "I greatly appreciate the MLBPA's cooperation in putting the new postseason format in place this year, the enthusiasm for the 10-team structure among our clubs, fans, Partners has been overwhelming. This change increases the rewards of a division championship and allows two additional markets to experience playoff.”
Later, Michael Weiner, union's executive director said, "A bunch of players and a bunch of people on the owners' side put their heads together to try and solve the problem,”
Weiner, who has been an advocate of many petty matters since many years now, surely wants to change the playing environment in accordance with every season’s needs and expectations.
This addition of two teams will also increase the competition within the division. Though the addition of two teams will change the overall playoff schedule, but will not be affecting the schedule of World Series and League Championship Series.
Many critics have already taken this situation with great disappointment while many on the other hand, are appreciating the fact of competition in the League. Those who are opposing the fact of adding two extra teams in the postseason, complaining as the League has somewhat did this new implementation just to earn more money from T.V rights and from season tickets.
These critics also say that the real disadvantage of having ten teams in the playoffs is when the level of competition will decrease and allow less competitive teams become more effective on all the entire standing of the competition in the end from now onwards.
