League leaders Philadelphia Flyers continues winning as it defeats Montreal Canadiens by 5-2
The eagerly anticipated game of Tuesday was the league leaders, Philadelphia Flyers, playing host to Montreal Canadiens. This was the 735th game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series which saw both teams playing the 50th game of
the season so far. The match took place at the Wells Fargo Arena with around 20,000 fans coming to witness the match.
Both teams were evenly matched during the course of the entire match but it was Philadelphia Flyers that was the more productive of the two teams and won the match 5-2 in the end. Claude Giroux, winger of the Philadelphia Flyers, was the player of the match
for his goal at a crucial stage.
Both teams made cautious start to the match which saw them waiting for opportunities to come their way. There were several occasions where the teams could have attacked and scored but they preferred to wait for the right moment.
The period progressed with the teams moving smoothly. However, they shifted gears as the period was nearing its end and shots on goal started to increase.
Just when it looked as if the period would end goalless, Philadelphia Flyers took the lead with the goal scored by Jeff Carter from a wonderful backhand shot in the 18th minute.
Philadelphia Flyers continued to pile pressure on the away side and its hard work was rewarded as it scored once again in the 19th minute to double its lead.
The goal was scored by Kimmo Timonen from a brilliant powerful strike.
In the last few minutes there were couple of shots made by both teams but no further goals were scored. The period ended with Philadelphia Flyers leading 2-0 going into the break.
During the course of the period Philadelphia Flyers made 10 goal attempts while Montreal Canadiens made 9 goal attempts.
The second period saw both teams exploding right from the start of the period and were successful in maintaining the energy level till the end of the period which resulted in goals for both sides.
The first goal of the period took 23 seconds to be scored. The goal was scored through a brilliant backhand shot by Daniel Carcillo.
The period moved on swiftly after the goal with both teams continuing to attack.
Montreal Canadiens successfully opened its account and scored through David Desharnais’s powerful strike in the 13th minute.
The attacking mentality adopted by both teams continued which resulted in more scoring chances for both sides.
Philadelphia Flyers extended its lead to three goals scoring once again through Claude Giroux in the 17th minute.
The period ended with Philadelphia Flyers leading 4-1 with Montreal Canadiens making 15 goal attempts in the period while Philadelphia Flyers made 16 goal attempts.
The final period started off slowly for both teams but with the passage of time, the game took pace.
It took some time for the first goal to be scored but was finally scored by Mathieu Darche in favour of Montreal Canadiens in the 16th minute.
Nevertheless, it was Philadelphia Flyers who scored the next goal through Danny Briere in the final minute to seal the match.
The period and match ended with Philadelphia Flyers winning 5-2 in the end as it made 9 goal attempts in the final period while Montreal Canadiens made 7 goal attempts.
