League not intending on reaching out to Players' Association after Labour Talks Crashed -NHL Update
The National Hockey League (NHL) is in no position now and does not even intend to reach out to the Players’ Association after talks collapsed over a new labour deal earlier this week as NHL Deputy Commissioner, Bill Daly, termed them to be considering other
options in order to bring this lockout to an end.
For now, both sides seem to have lost sight of how they can get the 2012-2013 regular season going after an almost immediate collapse following two days of marathon meetings which definitely raised hopes of reaching a new bargaining agreement to much higher
levels than ever before.
"I have no reason, nor any intention, of reaching out to the union right now," Daly said in an email to The Associated Press. "I have no new ideas. Maybe they do. We are happy to listen."
"We spent much of Thursday evening and Friday updating players on what happened the last few days," players' association special counsel Steve Fehr said Friday. "The differences between us have been narrowed significantly and hopefully we will find a way
to bridge the remaining gap very soon."
The Players’ Association hinted at bringing back federal mediators, which team owners also thought might be a decent idea since all other attempts of ending the lockout have miserably failed up until now. There are no sureties though at this moment that
it will bring about a new collective bargaining agreement since their last intervention did not work out that well either.
What was most surprising for all stakeholders involved was that players and team owners seemed to have worked out on a number of issues during their eight-hour long meeting earlier on Tuesday, but all talks failed and proposals were rejected the very next
day without any indications of wanting to compensate.
Expectations were high by fans who have been eagerly awaiting the return of the 2012-2013 regular season, which unfortunately, was not even able to take off. Updates should be looked forward to in the upcoming days, but it is quite obvious now, nothing major
will be coming out in the near future.
