  1. league every time im saints too

  2. Hull FC  - League, Northampton Saints & Natal Sharks - Union.

  3. I prefer union for a number of reasons.

Scrums and lineouts are contested which adds a physical dimension to the game and allows for a variety of builds to be incorporated into a single rugby team.

The fact that in union the opposition contest possession at every breakdown means that the need to recycle the ball and maintain possession is vital whereas in League it's relatively rare in comparison to turn over ball unless the tackle is so huge that it unsettles the ball from the carrier's grip.

Whilst League supporters refer to rugby union as kick and clap, I think that kicking for position, possession, in defence and in attack adds an extra worry to union defenses meaning that there is more to think about in defence and more range to the attacking team's arsenal.

You can offload the ball in union. Quite simply, for me, it's more exciting to watch a flowing move where the ball is popped out of the tackle and play may continue down the field than to see people following a relatively limited (though perfectly logical given the rules of league) game plan that is far more stop start than union.

This said, I love league for the head on tackling and the power of the hits which are obviously far harder and far more frequent (in part because the game revolves around players running head-on into each other on a regular basis). A great runner in league is as good as a great runner in union, as proven by Jason Robinson, Lote Tuqiuri, Wendell Sailor and Matt Rogers to name but a few.

The two games are very different but in my personal experience of having played a lot of both I prefer playing union. When it comes to watching I'm more interested in following union but admit that League games can be much faster paced and more interesting to watch than a game of union played in the mud where both fly halves spend their day kicking.

Union at top level is good but there is not as much depth as league.
