League taking bad steps according to Pundits -NHL Update
The National Hockey League (NHL), without a doubt has certainly not shown any tolerance to the demands made by the NHL Players’ Association since day one when negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) kicked off in June. These choices
have forced pundits from around the nation to come out and condemn some of their acts.
At the moment, there is less than a month remaining till the current labour deal comes to an end and it could certainly lead to a limitless lockout if the league does not bunch on some of its terms and conditions.
Back in 2005 when the NHL went through a yearlong lockout, it was commissioner Gary Bettman who termed the deal making process and listening to what the players had to say an important part of the process, but recently, it seems as if Bettman as totally
taken a u-turn altogether.
Back in August, Bettman showed a strict sense of intimidation when he termed the current deal to be one which is favoring the players too much. According to him, “We need to be paying out less in player costs”.
There were several moments during the previous deal making negotiations, which were less than a decade ago, in which the league had termed the whole thing a mess that could get out of control in the future if not dealt with care, but now, it certainly does
look like the NHL is willing to go into a lockout forever if needed.
At the moment, another deadlock between the NHLPA and league has sprouted out as both sides are not listening to each other’s demands and many pundits have termed this to be unfair to the players in each case. Some things like decreasing the players share
in revenue along with eliminating the arbitration process, increasing entry-level contracts to five years instead of three and many more propositions by the league have forced players to rethink their stance.
Going into the entire thing, it seemed like both sides would be able to work something out before the CBA, formed back in 2005, would come to an end, but as some anonymous insiders had termed a lockout to be for sure in previous weeks, now seems to be the
perfect weather for a never ending storm.
