Leah Stevens and Jake Schultz impress in swimming events – High School State Championships, Kentucky
Leah Stevens of SHA and Jake Schultz of BAL impressed the audience by capturing gold medal of the 200yard freestyle in Girls and Boys category respectively at the Kentucky High School State Championships for Boys and Girls in Louisville on February 26.
The 9-year-old Stevens stunned the crowd with her nerve-wrecking form in the 200yard event, where she posted a time of 1 minute and 50.60 seconds for gold medal. She remained nearly one second ahead of Elizabeth House of DM, who followed her on the victory
stand for silver medal by producing an effort of 1 minute and 51.46 seconds.
The third position of the event was obtained by Kate Tarvestad, who remained 2.52 seconds slower from her foregoing competitor and pocketed bronze medal of the event with an effort of 1 minute and 53.98 seconds.
In the meantime, the audience witnessed Schultz’s mind-blowing effort in the Boys equivalent event. He faced tough competition from his following swimmer but succeeded in edging him out on the finishing end for gold medal by clocking a time of 1 minute and
42.92 seconds.
With his promising effort, he stayed 0.25 seconds ahead of William Buese of STX, who ended second with the timing of 1 minute and 43.17 seconds. Buese also faced strong battle from his team-member, William Cromer, who was just 0.35 seconds apart and reported
a time of 1 minute and 43.52 seconds for bronze medal.
Later, Sharli Brady of COP excelled in the Girls 200yard Individual Medley (IM). The 10-year-old Brady overpowered her opponents with a wonderful effort of 2 minutes and 02.36 seconds for gold medal.
She was chased by Miranda Mercke of SHA, who hit the wall with the timing of 2 minutes and 04.93 seconds for silver medal. Mercke remained just 0.08 seconds faster from her subsequent swimmer, Ellie Grimes of DM, who achieved bronze medal of the discipline
by concluding her swim in a time of 2 minutes and 05.01 seconds.
The crowd appreciated tremendous efforts of all position holders whereas the winners were awarded accolades for their undisputed efforts in their events after the session.
