Leah Stevens captures Women’s 1650 yard freestyle gold – Speedo Winter Junior Nationals
Leah Stevens of Lakeside Swim Team captured gold medal of the Women’s 1650 yard freestyle on final day of the 2012 Speedo Winter Junior National Championships at University of Tennessee, Knoxville on Saturday, December 8.
The 16-year-old Stevens showed no mercy to her supporters in the distant freestyle discipline, as she remained prominently ahead of her strongest opponent and tapped the wall for gold medal.
With her epic pace, Stevens enjoyed a lead of more than four body lengths over her closest swimmer and tapped the wall for the crown by producing a time of 16 minutes and 07.77 seconds.
The champion was followed by Erin Emery of Sandpipers of Neptune, who stayed 4.19 seconds behind and secured silver medal of the event by producing a time of 16 minutes and 11.96 seconds.
The silver medallist was traced by Ashley Neidigh of Bolles School Sharks, who was one and a half body length slower from her foregoing finisher and completed her race in third place by reporting a time of 16 minutes and 13.51 seconds.
Fourth spot of the discipline was followed by Zoe Thatcher of Mason Manta Rays, who stayed considerably slower from her foregoing finisher and posted an effort of 16 minutes and 19.37 seconds.
Thatcher was followed by Miriam Stinson of Nashville Aquatics, who stayed almost six seconds behind and clocked a time of 16 minutes and 25.41 seconds for fifth place.
Sixth position of the race was obtained by Hannah Burns of Gator Swim Club, who also stayed prominently behind her former finisher and posted a time of 16 minutes and 29.10 seconds.
Burns was chased by Ashlee Korsberg of Crimson Aquatics, who was 3.54 seconds apart and clocked an effort of 16 minutes and 32.64 seconds for seventh place.
Eighth position of the event was obtained by Morgan Dickson of Patriot Aquatic, who was 5.30 seconds behind and touched the wall with an effort of 16 minutes and 37.94 seconds.
In addition, Stevens received a huge round of applause from the audience for her commendable form and raked medal and accolade at the prize ceremony of the event.
