Question:

Leaking tail pipe auto?

I have an older car that has developed a leak in the tail pipe, but the muffler is intact. The leak is at a seam where two pipes join, and it is not overly large in area.

The muffler shop want $250.00 to repair it, saying I need a whole new pipe assembly.

Can I buy a patch repair kit to seal the leak since the car will only be used for a short time before it is replaced?

  1. It may or may not need a new pipe but $250 is outrageous. Shop for a new shop. Typically the tail pipe is the pipe after the muffler and the exhaust pipe is the pipe before the muffler. On my car there is also a resonator in the middle of the exhaust pipe. It could be that you need that part replaced but they should explain all that to you. Still shop for a cheaper price.

  2. cut the pipe and put a sleave in it, with 2 clamps.

  3. If it is a rusted out spot you could get a decent welder to just plug the hole (assuming you know someone).  If it just the seam buy another exhaust clamp and tighten it next to the one that is already there.  If neither of those are possible get more quotes and try some patch you never no how long it will last but is cheap enough to do several times before you spend that much.

  4. Patches are temporary and can last from 1 day to several months. I like to use a soda can and wire..
