Question:

Leaky shower?

I have had a nice constant drip out of my shower head for weeks and it's time to fix it. I thought it might be the shower head but after removal I see that water is still coming out of the pipe. Both hot and cold water handles are tightly turned off also, any suggestions?

  1. Check the washers in the handles. They could be old and need replacing. Just remove the handles and look for the  rubber ring that resembles a rubber band. Replace both on hot and cold handles. It worked for me. Good luck

  2. In the first place there are no washers in the handles. Take the set s***w out which is located under the cap that has an"H" or "C". removed the handle. make sure the water is turned off to the house and the pressure relieved. You will need a deep socket to get past the valve stem and fit over the large nut, with the handle off you will see what I mean. Unscrew the valve stem and replace the washer, these come in different sizes, Take the valve stem to your local hardware or supply house and tell the man what you need.

  3. you need to rebuild your shower valves. it sounds like you have a 2 handle system. turn off the water and take apart your stems and seats. but new stems and seats and this will stop the leak. you need to buy a seat tool. if you dont replace the seats you can just expect it to leak again very soon.

  4. At the handle, there is a valve with a rubber O-ring and washer in it that have worn, allowing a small amount of water to escape past even when the valve stem s***w is fully tightened. Some of them can be replaced, some can't.  Some showers will have an access panel in the other side of the wall, some won't.  Some shower handles can be removed and the stem assembly is very easy to remove and you can do it without cutting through the wall.  Some don't.  You need to look up the manufacturer of your tub valve and see if there is a kit available to install. The kit should come with instructions.  Beware corrosion.  If you find that you can't get it apart, you may have bad corrosion.  The only thing to do may be to replace the entire assembly (this is the voice of experience talking) in which case you may have to tear into the wall and pray you don't run into a mass of mildew! :(

  5. A shot of penicillin should clear that right up.
