Leandro Usuna and Bino Lopes move into Round 4 at Arica World Star Tour – Surfing News
Argentina’s Leandro Usuna and Brazil’s Bino Lopes advanced into the fourth round (Round of 16) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 3-Star Arica World Star tour presented by Maui and Sons after walking away with top honours from their respective
Round 3 (Round of 32) heats that went down at the reef break of El Gringo in Arica, Chile, on Friday, June 15.
Hawaii’s Eala Stewart finished behind Usuna in the first heat to advance through into the next round. America’s Brad Ettinger and Hawaii’s Luke Shepardson, however, were eliminated from the competition following their bottom-two finish.
The second heat saw Argentina’s Lucas Santamaria accompany Lopes into the next round following his runner-up finish. Ecuador’s Carlos Goncalves finished third, while Brazil’s Caue Wood had to settle for a fourth-place finish. Both the surfers got added to
the elimination list as a result.
The intimidating event site offered three-to-five foot barrels on its latest day of action. The waves were bound to challenge the perseverance and patience of the competition field that comprised of both local and international talent.
The opening heat of Round 3 featured an impressive performance by Usuna as he took an excellent win in the four-man battle. The Argentinean surfer collected a 5.25 off his first business-wave and immediately backed it up with an exquisite 7.00-point ride
to eventually finish with a decisive heat-total of 12.25 points.
Stewart successfully extended his life in the event as well after sitting at a heat-total of 11.25 points at the conclusion of the heat, having scored a 6.50 and 4.75 off his best-two waves.
Ettinger took third place with a heat-total of 7.60 points, while Shepardson rounded out the bottom-position with a two-wave total of 6.45 points. Both the surfers were consequently forced to leave the competition field on just the third day of competition.
The second heat saw Lopes walk away with the win after collecting a 2.75 off his first business-wave and backing it up with a 4.50-point ride for a heat-total of 7.25 points.
Santamaria missed out on the win by not much, scoring a couple of scores in the three-point range for a heat-total of 7.15 points.
Goncalves and Wood finished with a heat-total of 5.45 and 2.75 points respectively. The lacklustre performance led to their removal from the competition field at the latest ASP 3-Star event.
