my bf has a really hard time reading and writing. We had an argument the other day and i went into the bathroom. He slipped me a note and i swear i would have thought it was written by a 1st grader. he says he was never taught how to read, write, or right from wrong. im not too sure how to go about this =\

  1. ask him if he ever got special education services, he may have been identified with a cognitive or learning disability.

He also maybe didn't go to school as much as he should have- that's possible, right?  Some I know I'm going to get thumbs downs for saying this, but really think about the relationship, because the issue can be hereditary/environmentally based.  Think about it!

  2. I think it is possible your boyfriend is dyslexic, the only way for this to be confirmed is if he is tested.

I have given you some websites below which should help you find out whether this is the case and what you can do to help.

My own son is dyslexic but was fortunately diagnosed in primary school. With the right help he obtained higher examinations in English amongst other subjects.

I also have a friend who was not diagnosed until he was in his thirties but with the help of his wife (also dyslexic but diagnosed when at school) she undertook to teach him herself and he can now read and write well.

Many dyslexics manage well without being able to read and write as they are usually very intelligent but if your boyfriend is dyslexic with the right help he will find it far easier to achieve his full potential.

There are adult literacy classes available in many areas you could try your local public library for help in finding them.

    Good luck.
