I’m having trouble in school because I learn slow and it can take me a long time to learn something even with detailed explanation and going over it many times before it registers for later use. What can I do?

  1. Try to bring a tape recorder to school to record the teacher's lecture.  When you go home, listen to it again or as many times as needed to understand it.

When studying at home, try to prepare for the upcoming lecture, write down questions you may have and see if they were answered through the lecture the next day.  It helps to read and prepare ahead so that you already have some idea of what the lecture is about.

Put down new vocabulary words on an index card, write down the definition, draw a picture that respresents that word, and write down a sentence of your own that utilizes that word.  Put all the words in an index card box & practice the new words everyday.

Practice explaining it to someone.  If you can explain it and "teach" someone, you have understood it.

These are just general guidelines.  If you still need help, maybe you can hire a tutor, ask your teacher for help, or go to a learning center for students who need extra help.  Good luck!

  2. Make sure you get your vitamins if you don't have enough of a certain vitamin it could cause an imbalance of chemicals in the brain.

  3. I have heard that Albert Einstein once stopped an asociate who was explaining a theory and asked him to slow down because "I learn things slowly."  If you have the capacity to grasp the concepts eventually that is a good sign.

You may want to talk to a professional who can explore if there are ways to help you learn more efficiently, but slow learning is not always bad.
