I'm interested (and a little nervous) in learning how to fly. I've been looking at a sport pilot license to fly one of those lightweight planes.

What can you tell me about your experience? Were you nervous?? Is is worth it?

  1. I'm finishing up my private license right now and absolutely no regrets!!! It was a very nervous yet exciting day when my instructor let me fly solo. It was like driving by yourself for the first time only more exciting. I tell you, it's a feeling of great accomplishment being able to pilot an aircraft. You will be doing something that not a lot of people do. Your nervousness should turn into excitement shortly after you start!

  2. The only thing scary about flying is the cost. That being said however, it is the best investment I have ever made in terms of personal satisfaction.

Be ready to invest at least $6-8000 to obtain your private certificate. Sport pilot is a little cheaper but I would go for private minimum. And invest your time as well. Throw yourself into it and learn otherwise you are throwing money away. I have seen a few people start and take their lessons sporadically and they either never finish or take so long that they wind up spending more than they needed.

  3. It is completely normal to feel a little nervous when trying something new. I too was a little nervous the first couple of lessons, but after a while or so I wouldn't feel so nervous. Usually CFIs do a good job in explaining everything before a flight, just so you know what to expect. Aviation  is a great thing and I've yet to meet a pilot that regrets having learned to fly. Personaly it was the best desicion I ever made.  It is defenetly worth it and its a good investment to make and worth every penny. So wether you make aviation a passtime or a career, go for it. You wont regret it.

  4. Hi. I am about 3 weeks away from my checkride and I can tell you that it will be the BEST decision you ever make. I am going for my sport certificate like you mentioned, and even tho it's in a smaller plane, it is still a fantastic experience. I would recommend the sport license with no question. It is cheaper and once you are done you can jump right in training again if you want, to obtain your private pilots certificate and all of the hours you rack up counts towards your private pilot training. I guarantee, once you start your training and begin to advance you will be hooked. When I soloed it wasn't that big of a deal for me...but when I did my solo cross-country flight, I had the biggest feeling of accomplishment ever! And you will too. Just remember to listen to your instructor, but don't be afraid to ask questions. HAPPY FLYING!

  5. If you don't have a lot of money and just plan on puddle jumping( local flying) then Light Sport is the way to go.
