Learn to deal with being dubbed “injury-prone”, Lee advises Cummins – Cricket News Update
Former Australian pacer http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Iftikhar-Ali-Khan-Pataudi-Nawab-of-c64075 Cummins, who is currently recovering from a side strain, to learn to deal with frequent injuries, which are an unfortunate
part of a fast bowlers’ career.
"The thing I told him ... is that you're going to get injured unfortunately," said Lee. "If you put yourself and your body on the line every single time you bowl a ball the chances are you will get injured so you have to learn how to deal with that."
Initially intending to retire after the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 this September, Lee flew home early from Australia’s ODI tour of England after suffering a calf muscle injury, and decided to hang up his boots sooner than expected
(although he has expressed the intent to play on in T20 tournaments such as the IPL and Big Bash League).
Cummins had been ruled out of the same series earlier – he suffered a medium grade side-strain during the series opener at Lord’s, and consequently had to fly home earlier than expected.
The 19-year-old’s abrupt departure came as a disappointment – after an impressive debut in November 2011 during a Test match against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757, which saw him claiming a total of 7 wickets, Cummins had been touted as the future of the Aussie pace attack,
but was unable to make much of an impression during the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 tour owing to his injury.
However, veteran pacer Lee, who debuted in 1999 and has a career that spans 76 Tests and 221 ODIs, has advised the youngster to get used to dealing with injuries, and the often harsh and unreasonable line adopted by the media.
"Learn how to deal with the media saying you're injury prone, learn how to deal with people saying you need to bowl 150km every single ball," he insisted.
Lee himself suffered a number of injuries throughout his career, most of them owing to a troublesome elbow and ankle. He had surgery on his elbow in 2001 (which ruled him out for three months) and 2009, and ankle surgery in 2007 (which ruled him out of the
World Cup) and 2009. He also spent most of 2010 out of the national side owing to injuries.
However, the 35-year-old, who has claimed a record 380 ODI wickets, expressed his faith in Cummins, claiming that he knew the young right-armer had what it takes to succeed as a fast bowler.
"It's tough, it's challenging but I know he can do it,” Lee said. "With his make-up and what he knows at the age of 19 it's unbelievable."
