Question:

Learner driver insurance.

I have a 19 year old and 17 year old both learning to drive. My son has just bought a car which we need to get insured so they can both practice on it but I already have insurance on my own car. What is the cheapest way to insure my son's car bearing in mind that he is still a learner?

I know that there are a couple of companies who insure learner drivers at quite reasonable rates as long a they have an insured, experienced driver sitting next to them. Would I have to then be insured twice (once for each car)? What is my best option?

All advice appreciated.

  1. Both kids should be on your policy but since it sounds like he/she has bought the car in his name I don't know how your company will handle that.  You can get the kids a separate policy but if they have an at fault accident the other party is still going to go after you and they can file a claim under both policies.  You should check into these things before you do them.

  2. I would go for quotes from several brokers or insurance companies and make your own mind up.One thing to bear in mind-learners cost the earth to insure.Under no circumstances should you put them on your insurance for obvious reasons.

  3. You MUST add them to any Insurance Policy you have or will be getting as long as they live in your household, unless you get them insurance on ther own. The cheapest way would be to add them to your policy or any policy you may get if you are shopping & find a better rate with a different Insurance Company.

  4. Keep your insurance separate from all of it and do some searching to get some insurance for the kids, which won't be cheap.

See this http://gsx1.com/InsuranceComparison.html take the quote, they'll come back with prices from different insurers in your area. It's very quick and free of charge.

But to find a cheap price you should get several quotes, do some legwork till something better will come along.

there'll be tons more in google, get your son to do it so he gets to see how the quotes can wildly differ in price, it can only help him in the future.
