  1. Hi there

I'm not a firm believer of the new rules. I only passed my test last March, and before that had been driving on my own, without L Plates, despite not being allowed to.

Of course, with this new lot of rules, you get a massive fine both for not having the L Plates displayed and not having a qualified driver with you.

Now, my brother is 17 and new to it all. Hes mad to get out onto the road and I really cant stop him in doing so. A local Garda has actually said to show the letter saying that he's waiting on his test and he should get away with it if he is stopped. This has to be rubbish and this guy in his powerful position really shouldnt be telling people things like this.

Today, my brothers 18 year old friend died in an accident. He had been driving for two years, and passed his test just two weeks ago. He crashed heading into work this morning (in Athlone) and sadly died at the scene.

I believe that you are the same driver whether you have passed your test or not. The day before I passed, I was the very same person and had the very same level of driving than the day I passed.

I believe the Irish Government are trying to stamp out guys and girls with sooped up cars, etc... who may not even be the cause of trouble.

I live in a semi-rural area, and its people like the older generation who seemed to have gotten their licences in goodie bags that need stamping out, not genuine younger people just trying to go about their lives.

  2. Hi,

I asked a similar question myself a little earlier on. Yes I am. I'm on my 2nd provisional, (although I drove years ago and I held 3 licence's so technically this is my 5th, but I don't know how it's going to work out for me!)I stopped driving for a few years & when I went to re-apply I had to sit a Theory test & when I received my licence it had 1st licence on it!

I did a test and unfortunetly failed, so I'm re-applying for another one.  I think the whole thing is stupid!  Either they (The Government)enforce the law on ALL provisional drivers or none at all!

I'm sure this law was brought on by the "Little boy racers" so it's not fair that the rest of us has to fall the victim!

So as for your question I'm driving only when it's necessary, otherwise the car is left just sitting outside the door.  It's a pity to say the least.  I mean if you have your car Taxed Insured Nct'd and you have a licence whatever it is you should be allowed to drive!  That's just my opinion!

  3. No and now I can't pay for my college as a result. Was supposed to have a test this month but the NCT is epired and despite the website saying they send you the appointment they no longer do that and as a result I can't even take my test!

  4. yes i am...im on my 3rd provisional...im waiting on a date for my driving test

  5. hi you

i hate to put a damper on your questions this is not a new rule what this is they have now done away with the new rule so were back to the way we were in the early 70`s before it came but what i do find funny is if you drive a motor bike you still cant have anybody on the bike with you as learner drivers cant carry passengers on bikes
