Question:

Learning Brazilian Portuguese - how to translate the "non-dictionary" words?

I'm learning Brazilian Portuguese and love the language. Reading blogs written by people in Brazil really helps me a lot! But the hardest thing is when I come across slang/colloquial phrases that I cannot find translations for. Sometimes I post them on here, but since my list is expanding, I'm hoping to find a resource or website where I can get translations for these slangs/colloquialisms. Any ideas? Thanks!! :D

  1. Hard request. The problem is that the normal words and slangs are used in a short way. For exemple: you use "4" when you mean "for". Here we do the same. Instead of você ("you) we use vc when writting inside web. The best would be have some brazilian to help you. I can help you anytime (just send me an email so I can send you my personal email).

    Abraços!

Besides, I recommend using your favourite search engine to find several examples of the phrase, which gives you a more accurate idea of the actual usage.  If you have the time and patience, try to guess its meaning from context before you look it up.  At least for me, that helps me to remember the phrase much better.
