I picked up the guitar the guitar about 2 weeks ago and have fiddling with it trying to learn the basics, i started following a couple tutorials I found online, but im just not sure what to learn b4 what.

i.e i spent hours learning open chords but havent been practicing alternating picking, and it has become a bad habit.

can someone kinda break down when i should be learning how to do what

should i learn scales b4 open chords. when should i start learining barre chords, when should i start to learn chords, alternate picking, strumming techniques, ... so much stuff

also, im practicing on a guitar that i bought a few years ago w/o much research. its a behringer electric, that cost about $90 w/ and amp.. which i now realize is extremely cheap, and im not sure if its the guitar that sounds like c**p, my playing or a combination of both, what should i do to bring the best sound out of the guitar?

  1. Hi Nat

Everybody blames the instrument. It is never the players fault. That is a bad attitude and even if I give you a $1000 guitar, the guitar will only sound as good as you are.

I suggest to learn basic chords and secondly, learn the scales that go with it. Each week, add a new chord and a new scale. This way,  you will know where to solo and what chord position to use.

Here are 2 good site to help you in chords and scales. One final thought, alternate pic every note. That is the secret to speed. Their are other techniques but you can start with that.
