  1. WEll... I think you answered your own question.

Play shinny (pick up hockey) and learn a thing or two.  Skate, and perhaps if you're really into it, join power skating clinics.  And then start in your beginner hockey league.

I used to ref this league called "Hockey North America".  IT's a beginner adult league that spans American and Canadian cities (and even a couple in Europe).  IT's always a good decisision... well run league.

Either way, just have fun and keep your stick on the ice.

  2. You're in a very similar situation to me learning to play, actually. same age and everything. And used to skate.

Don't go out to pickup games. Those are when the people who know how to play come out and play just for fun, without refs and such. They are usually the better players, you will be out of your league.

Most rinks have an adult learn to play course. Contact the rink, sign up for it, and take that for a few months before signing up for the beginner league. I waited until I was 18 and joined the lowest level adult league.

So sign up for the adult lessons, then after doing those for a while sign up for a league, adult or otherwise.

  3. Just do it.. have fun. Do it all.

  4. i think you should start with a house league if your rink provides one. as you get better and better start going to clinics for skating and stick handling. one camp i would recommend would be Laura Stamm. Its is bit pricey but well worth it. i went to it for a weekend and i had the captain's c on my shoulder my freshmen year. Check out laurastamm.com for further info.

Also Robbie Grant works well too

  5. pick up games is just people make teams and play. You should go to open ice and clinics
