Learning a programming language?

Question

I want to start learning a programming language which will allow me to write applications. I am very confident with HTML/XHTML, CSS. I also know PHP including interaction with MySQL. So I do have some programming experience from PHP but I wanna start learning something which will make me able to write applications. I just have no idea what to go for, I was thinking about C++, well I don't really know. As well as suggesting a language i'd appreciate some editors/compilers to help me get going. =]

I would definitely recommend you PHP Language with MySQL as it Database Back-end.
PHP is no doubt the most vastly grooming Web Technology of modern era. It has all the best features available from the beginning to advance level.
