Learning from mistake: New York Giants’ Osi Umenyiora attends media session after receiving a fine
A day after missing the mandatory media session and receiving a fine by the National Football League (NFL), New York Giants’ defensive end, Osi Umenyiora, showed up for the media session on Thursday, February 2, 2012, in Indianapolis, and the first thing
he did was issuing an apology.
A day earlier, Osi along with five other teammates, was expected to address the media at the team hotel. Except Osi, all the Giants players were available.
Within two hours after the media session, which lasted for about 45 minutes, the league penalised Osi for violating the conduct and imposed a fine of $20,000.
While apologising, Osi clarified that he misunderstood the regulations and was unaware that the players should attend all the media sessions.
After attending the session on Tuesday, Osi thought it was not necessary for him to attend it on Wednesday as well.
"It cost me a lot of money, I am sorry about that," Umenyiora said.
He added that:
"At the end of the day I don't really know what I could have discussed with you guys between Tuesday's media day and Wednesday morning. It is not like we had a practice or anything like that. At the end of the day, I understand why they did it and I am OK
with it."
When asked about what he thought of the amount of fine, Osi said that the league had to make a point that it would not tolerate any violation of conduct.
He further said that if the league had just issued a warning or had imposed a fine of a meagre value, no one would have noticed it.
The Super Bowl hype was slightly taken over by Osi absence, which was covered on a wide scale.
Osi was of the view that his issue was not very important and that there were a lot of other things to worry about.
“You have to move on to something else. I just so happened to give people an outlet to talk about something else. I am dearly sorry for that."
Giants are going to play New England Patriots in the Super Bowl XLVI matchup on February 5.
