  1. There are some schools out there that still give "scholarships".

You might also be able to start taking some private lessons.  We do that all the time, some people will only take 1 or 2 per month as they can afford it.  We usually give them "homework" so that they can work on a few things at home, and when they come back again next time, we take a look at it, make any adjustments, and teach them something else.  Takes a long time to learn that way, but it certainly can be done.  One benefit to learning that way, is that you get the full attention of the instructor, and usually get straight into the learning process, since you usually stretch beforehand.

    Good Luck

  2. Perhaps you can find a school that will help you by giving you some lessons in exchange for working at the school. our school has in the past given students a discount for cleaning the school and helping with maintenance like painting and repairing dented walls etc.. We insisted that the also give 100 percent in every class and be an example of a good student.

  3. There really isn't a good substitution for formal martial arts training, but if money is an issue, then there are books and DVDs out there.  You can also check youtube or other sites for training videos.

  4. Hello aethermist5

I do symphatized with your current financial situation, unfortunately,  there's no martial arts instruction avalable for free.

Perhaps, depending on how serious you are, I am almost positive that there are schools out there will to give you a job in exchange for lessons.   The other options you have is to aquire a part time job to pay for classes.

If not,  With all the sincerity of my response, training via online, videos, or books without proper instruction and guidance from a qualified martial arts instructor are rarely a path one chose if they want to succeed and progressed as a serious and decicated martial artist.

Self-training using video, internet and books cannot turn you into a good or an effective martial arts practitioner. Many can argue that Bruce Lee did it, but how many had forgotten that Bruce Lee had a solid martial arts background before he ventured on to create Jeet Kune Do.

Another detrimental result by training online , videos, or books is that this method teaching medium cannot correct or give you advices either you're doing things right or even wrong. Training martial arts without proper instructions and supervision can also cause minor or even serious injury.

Learning martial  online, videos, or books can be best described  having a online, videos, or books romance. You don't quite get the real thing !

You might think that you may have discovered the ultimate and cheaper way of training in the martial arts, but when reality strikes, the facade and sloppiness of your "self-training" will show.   The worst that can happen also is having a false sense of security.

A majority of self-taught, pseudo blackbelts, MMA poseurs and other fraudulent wanna-be martial arts "practitioners" are one of the main reasons why the general public looks down on the martial arts and its practitioners. Many of the long time legitimate practitioners of the martial arts regardless of styles finds this awfully frustrating and horrendous , when we spent half of our life trying to live up to the highest standard and virtues of our beloved art.

For long time and experienced practitioners of the martial arts , video training or other forms of training such as DVD's and the internet are just another "tool" in our  "toolbox"

  5. you can learn from book or video tutorial like

    http://searchoptima.com/martial_arts.spo...

    http://theclickinfo.com/martial_arts.boo...

  6. Put it like this - if you can learn to read, write, invest, politics, history from books, you can learn SOME martial arts from books and videos....it just depends on how diligent you are.

You will certainly need a SPARRING PARTNER who is willing to learn as well. You need to find QUALITY MATERIAL to learn from, and you need a DEDICATED SCHEDULE.

Just keep in mind that you will not learn FORMS, KATAS, and other types of minute, specific and very detailed techniques.

You CAN however, learn how to take someone down, how to strike vital points, how to use leverage against someone, how to apply a choke correctly, how to properly apply body weight to a punch.

Other people saying for CERTAIN that you CANNOT learn a martial art from videos/books are elitists and probably forgot the fact that most universities and schools teach students from books and videos.

Be safe, be confident, forget the elitists..learn your skill any way you can.

  7. Find a friend of yours who is taking a martial art, then ask them to train you.

Or, go around to different MA acadamies. The first class is usually free, maybe you can take several first classes and then use that experience to help you learn from books and videos?

  8. Go to china and become a monk

  9. You may try to find some of your rec centers. Sometimes they may have some free classes. There are some classes that aren't advertised like in a church that may have free classes.

I teach martial arts for free in a rec center. It is one way that I give back to the community. Also, I do it to help underprivedge childrildren.
