Hey, I am going to latin america on holiday next week and need to learn some spanish.

I need a website or just some general tips of the most useful things that I will need. EG the verb IR or ESTAR and some useful adjectives.

Is it possible to pick a language up in about 5 days?

MUCHO GRACIAS

  1. I'm not quite so sure about picking up a language within 5 days thing, but you should check out http://livemocha.com , which is a language learning site/social network that adequately tracks your progress as you complete each course in Spanish, French, and a variety of other languages.

There's also Rosetta Stone if you're willing to fork up some bucks.

  2. It's hard to learn another language that fast, especially since we didn't learn out native language that fast.

However, you can learn a second language faster than your native language. Here is a website you can go to and find all of the most common phrases that natives use in daily conversation. This is great for the street, in homes, stores, school, work, everything!!

    Check it out.

  3. Well, as I think you realise, you're not going to become a master of Spanish in a week, so I think you should concentrate on memorising key phrases.

Find a phrasebook (online or printed) and learn key phrases you'd need to know for whatever you'd be doing on holiday (e.g. phrases you'd use in a restaurant; in a post-office; in a shop; a basic knowledge of numbers, and if all else fails, a couple of phrases to show you don't understand what was said or you do not know the Spanish for what you want to say, possibly even a request for them to say it in English). Another thing you may want to spend a couple of days on is learning purely about pronunciation and a few basic pronunciation rules so you know how to say any future phrases you come across. Luckily, Spanish is consistent in it's pronunciation, so learning a few basic rules should keep you on the right track.

It may also be useful for you to take a pocket Spanish phrasebook with you, and possibly even a pocket English-Spanish dictionary for any more phrases you may want to learn when you get there.

With this in mind, it is definitely achievable to pick up a minimal number of phrases within 5 days and enough knowledge to learn new phrases from phrasebooks when you're there. However, while this would suffice for a holiday, it is by no means fluency in the language.
