Question:

Learning the guitar?

My parents keeps bugging me to get a hobby. So I've been thinking about playing the guitar.

I'm almost 15, and I'm wondering, at what age will I be good at it?

I'm willing to learn. My dad's a guitarist and I'm into music a lot. I might take lessons and I learn to play a bit at school.

I've always wanted to play the guitar, I just never picked it up coz I always thought that maybe I'm too old for it now? It's not too late is it?

  1. Its never too late to take up a musical instrument.  I started on guitar when I was 13.

Definitely take lessons, you'll progress faster and be sure to learn everything you need to know.  Whereas a lot of people who teach themselves never really learn to play properly.  They learn a few riffs or song intros or solos from tabs but end up never really learning chords or how to play a steady rhythm while changing chords; they never learn scales or how to improvise or play by ear or play with other people.  They never really learn to PLAY, IOW.

Keep in mind that this is NOT easy. Don't pick up the guitar and expect to be good enough to play in a band in a month.  It will take several years before you're that good.

The secret is to learn to enjoy the learning process wherever you are in it, rather than getting frustrated because you can't rock out like Jimi Hendrix after a month.

Anybody who tells you they got their guitar today and after only a couple of hours of practice, they can already play 6 songs, is either (a) totally confused about what "playing a song" is, or (b) lying -- or else they're the greatest musical prodigy since Mozart.  I tend to believe its either (a) or (b).

  2. no ofcourse not if there is a will there is a way i am 15 myself and i have just started learning guitar myself so go get ur guitar and start learning if ur can play guitar let him teach u the basics how to read the notes the fingers etc.......... nothing is more lovely than playing guitar u will know the feeling when start learning guitar and play ur first solo

  3. You are never too old to play guitar. People who are 70 can learn a guitar. I just picked up my guitar last night (I'm 13) and I can already play 6 songs by the Jonas Brothers. It may take you a few weeks, or even a few hours. You need absolute patience, and you can't give up. I didn't have any patience when I tried to play it a few months ago, and I gave up. But now, I can play it, and I absolutely love it. It's more fun if you teach yourself. :)

  4. Learning to play the guitar is deffinitely not like becoming an astronaut (whateverthat **** is spelled like).

Just take the lessons, and play. If you like it, you'll find yourself standing for something like... 3 hours in a row over that **** trying to make your fingers where you want them to go.
