  1. Don't aim to make a living off of poker yet.  Playing professionally doesn't happen overnight.  It takes years and years and thousands upon thousands of hands played to fit into a groove.

You've also got to know how to manage your bankroll properly.  This is probably the best advice to give to a new player.  For cash game sessions or sit in go tournaments, risk no more than 5% of your bankroll in one sitting.  When you start off, say with $50-100, you shouldn't play with more than $2.50-5 for one tournament or cash game sitting.  This is one of the advantages of playing online, you can play for micro limits until you build a bankroll!

I'd recommend reading Phil Hellmuth's "Texas Hold' em" book.  People generally don't like the guy, but his tips are invaluable.  It's an easy read, and you can find it at your local book store chain for about $10.

I'd also recommend checking the site http://dagus-statistics.com/poker.htm for additional poker tips, http://dagus-statistics.com/funding.htm for deposit and withdrawal tips, and http://dagus-statistics.com/reviews.htm for a list of top poker sites with bonus codes.  Hope this helps!

You can watch a live internet game (with a short delay to avoid cheating obviously). They have commentators explaining the decision making. This makes learning much faster. Its free.

When you're ready to play online, avoid poker heaven, paradise poker, sky poker and titan.

I suggest ultimatebet or full tilt.

If you want to use it for sports betting aswell, join bet365.
