  1. scales are good to start with but look up the tablature on the net and it'll show you the fingerings, and the name of each note, you dont have to learn the names of each note but it will definitely help you become a better guitarist who is more fluent with their instrument in the long run so i recommend learning the notes.  it will all seem overwhelming at first but just take it one scale at a time and learn it forwards and backwards and all the notes in the scale and you will be tearing it up in no time. besides scales are the tools you use to improv and solo with.  so the better you know your scales and the notes in those scales the better and more interesting and more unique your songs, solos, and other things you write will become.  if your a fan of rock or metal then definitely get  some of the Troy Stetina guitar books, they're excellent to start out on.

  2. Yes, you should know what notes are in the scale so check this site out:

    http://www.cyberfret.com/scales/basic/pa...

That page shows the basic scales you should know. You can check out the other scales too in the Guitar Scales page (the link is to the left, under the Learn Guitar heading).

  3. Just learn the universal musical scale.

    A

    A#

    B

    C

    C#

    D

    D#

    E

    F

    F#

    G

    G#

And then just learn the string progression, the open note for each string, starting with low E, is EADGBE. If you got both of those figured out, just apply the universal musical scale to it. Say that you have to play the seventh fret on the low E string. Just look at the scale and find which note is seven pitches past E, which is B.

With that, you can figure out which notes are which from the fingerings.

  4. dude what you see in most of those youtube videos are Tabs...ummm thats all i can think about to say lol...
