  1. I agree with Sporky.  You can't teach a kid to read with worksheets.  Go to the public library and get out some books.  Membership is FREE!!!  It is better for a kid to learn through books and then do follow up activities on the computer.  Take him to the libary, show him the children's area and pick out some books.  There is a 5 finger rule- when he is reading, if he counts more than 5 words that he CAN'T read then it is too hard.  But if he is just learning then get books with 2 words per page and then move up to 3.  Make sure they are repetitious that way he can learn the words.  Then take the words from the story and practice taking them out of context.  Ex:  the, this, is, my.  Practice writing those words.  You can write the letters in notecards and mixing them up to where he has to correctly arrange the letters himself to form the word.  Also, as you are driving, see if he can recognize some words around him.  Walmart, McDonalds.  And look at the letters with him, point out some sounds.  You can do this at the grocery store also.  Ex: Milk.  Mmmmiiiiiillllllllkkkkkkk.  "What letter does milk start with?"  "What letter does it end with?"  "What sound does the I make?"  Make his learning and experience and not just him staring at the computer.

  2. The best thing you can do is be a good example.  If you want him to learn to read, you need to show that reading is an important skill to have.

Keep books, and magazines in the house.  Allow him to read what he wants, when he wants... that will keep him interested in continuing.  Forcing reading will only slow things down and cause trouble in the long run.  Proceed cautiously.

    Good luck :D

BTW, it's Preferably... spell check is great! lol

  3. www.starfall.com

Best site ever and it's free.

  4. This isn't a website but it's what we've been doing with our 5 year old and I can't wait to start with the children in my care when they reach the appropiate age.  :-)

Teach Your Child To Read in 100 Easy Lessons by Siegfried Engelmann.  Less than $20 at Barnes and Noble or Amazon.com.  Great reviews...check them out...don't just take my word for it.  :-)  My son is about halfway through the book and he's doing great!!!

  5. www.starfall.com

it is free and fun to learn..

My son know his letters and sounds and also capital letters and small lettters too. He is 3 year old. He learnt with starfall .com

Also I taught him using ABC song, Alphabet flash cards, and magnetic board.

Print out letters and color it with him.

He likes to use all items to play also to read. I play with him along with teaching..

  6. You can have your child make their own books w/ words he can read or predictable books. Have you child draw a picture and label the picture.

    or

Go on a word hunt have him circle word he can read in a newspaper

    or

    Magnetic letters /make words

    or

Pick a word a day ( a sight word= a word the have to memorize i.e. have, and, is, like) and have hime write in shaving cream, rainbow write, circle it in the newspaper etc

  7. I don't think doing worksheets is the best way to get a kid interested in reading. That's not how I learned. You should be a good example and show him that reading is fun. Maybe read to him.. you know let him look at the book while your reading. He'll pick it up. I don't remember ever actually doing worksheets and learning to read that way. I learned to read by reading.
