Question:

Learning to roll the "r"s in dutch?

When I first started learning I thought the "g" would be the most difficult, but that was before my boyfriend introduced me to the rolling "r." I practice frequently and never get any closer to accomplishing it. He does it without any effort.. I'm jealous! The "g" is easy to me now, so I'm hopeful I can pick this up too. lol

Does anyone have some tips, websites/videos, etc?

I'm getting a little frustrated and couldn't think of a better place to ask then here!

  1. i cant do it. couldnt ever do it in spanish....i gave up.

    good luck!

  2. Easy for me as I live in Spain but originate from Scotland. You can either do it or you can't. It's like whistling, you can do it or you can't do it.

  3. Put your tongue against the roof of your mouth and say: rrrr.

  4. I have University level Dutch and I never quite got that either, and it's not universal in the Netherlands, just in some parts.

  5. I am Dutch, and I know that not all Dutch people have that rolling R.

Some do, many had to train a lot as child and some will never get it right.

You will notice that many people make a different R from the one your friend uses.

As a rule you can say that your 'natural' R is accepted in Dutch, as one of the many possible ones.

To get the more rolling R you can say a lot of sentences with the R, like: Rode radijsjes rollen rond Rotterdam.
