  1. if your beginning its very important to get a long board.  they are really easy to balance on.    if u can get somebody who's surfed before to coach u its a lot easier to have somebody by ur side while surfing.  on the first couple waves just try riding on your knees or even on your stomach and then move to standing up.

    hope i helped

  2. Best bet if you are just going on vacation is to take a lesson.  Check the web for surf shops in HB and see if they have any clinics going n while you are there.  they will supply the boards and everything.

  3. a good exercise to learn for standing up...lay on the ground in a push up position with hands beside chest and in one quick motion do a push up to stand like you would on a surfboard..get that right then its knowing how to weight yourself on the board as you paddle,to far back and the nose is too high and to far forward an your nose of board sinks..best to be fingertips just over nose works for my shortboard and you dont need a mal to learn all you need is a little thicker board one that gives you boyancy in the water...hey good luck and hope you pick it up and enjoy the feeling of riding a wave

  4. You'll have more fun starting off body boarding. Much easier to turn on and do not need to get in as big of waves to get going fast. I did it for years till buying a surfboard. Glad I did. I learned wave selection and other things that had a steep learning curve in the surf lineup. On a beach break it was easier to get dumped on my head than on a reef or pile of rocks. Plus locals can be harsh in the real waves. Not a place to be learning placement.
