  1. It is not lame!! I'm glad you want to learn. :)

First of all, never try to stand up on your first run out. Bad idea.

Second, don't expect falling to be painless.

Third, when you're out in the ocean and a wave is coming, either ride it, paddle out, or go under. If you don't do anything, you'll wipe out, which isn't nice at all.

Also, you have to have to beware of other, more experianced, s****. surfers who cut you out and take your wave. Don't fight with them, ignore them.

I only started last summer, so I'm not that good, but that's all I can tell you! Hope I helped :)

  2. no its not lame! my sis learned to surf at 15!!

but its ok to learn at any age!!

  3. It's not totally lame!

  4. Hey im 14 and ive been surfing since i was six. Its not lame if you wanna start now. A ton of pros started in their late teens. First you need to find a managable begginers break. Something like La Jolla or Rincon in Californa or Coccoa Beach in Florida. I dont agree with another answer saying to get a softie. Although the soft foam boards are great for learning on, it will make the transition to a shortboard much harder and it will be more expensive. I started on a shortboard and kept riding shortboards when all my frends were on softies. I was a couple steps ahead of them when they switched. Also be prepared for some hold-downs and nose dives good luck

  5. DO NOT get a new surfboard or a shortboard. get a softie thats very long. read books to learn about surfing. those are pretty interesting and you might want to get the lingo down. and get a coach (private) they're great. and when you finally can surf by yourself you will KNOW it was worth the work because its so FUN

  6. I started surfing at 14, but I had been swimming in the ocean and back bays since I was little tike. I learned to surf, and sail pretty much on my own, because that's just the way things were in the '60s.. Today, people are learning to surf from toddlers (my 8 year old graddaughter for example) to 40 somethings. I love the growing popularity of surfing, as long as they learn the 'right way' to surf, that is to respect and love the ocean and use proper surf etiquette.

Learning to surf is more than just standing up on a surfboard. If you are going to surf, you should be a competent ocean swimmer. Not just good in a pool, but able to swim in the surf, and when the undertow and rips are strong. I have seen lots of good pool swimmers get rescued.

Once you get that far, I would recommend some surf lessons. Go to a REAL surf shop (not a bathing suit store that sells some surfboards). The folks there will rent you a board and hook you up with some lessons. If you are fairly athletic with okay balance, you will learn how to stand up fairly easily. Much more important, is for you to learn surf etiquette. A good instructor will make sure you understand the "rules" so that everybody else in the water doesn't want to kill you before you get good at surfing.

Don't look for tips on line, look for tips at a surf shop. Go for it! Surfing is the greatest stoke of all. Take the time to learn the right way, and you will have a source of fun for life.

  7. Enjoy surfing is great have been a devotee a good while now

start off just getting the feel of the board the movement and timing.start in the broken water then move out.

    links to guide you.

Surfing is not just a sport its a devotion, can learn any age while

    still fit.

  8. i cant give you very good tips. but here is one very important one: confidence. dont you dare go out there afaid and uncertain. it makes the expierence unenjoyable. have fun!!
