Question:

Leasing a horse in vermont?

I am putting my horse up for lease, I will never sell him but I think I may be traveling in the near future so I would like him to be in work and being properly cared for during that time. I am wondering about fair prices etc. If any of you have done this and have suggestions, it would be great. I will be checking references and he will likely go out on trial first. He is not going to just anyone, this is my baby. Thanks for your time!

  1. your horse does not need to be a top show horse in order to lease it out.  i have seen many good backyard ponies leased out to young riders.  i would suggest checking out dartmouth and middlebury colleges, they are always looking for horses to lease for their riding programs and the horses are always taken care of well.  check out some schooling barns around your area too and if it might be during the summer, check out some riding camps.  Most people will listen to your requests on what type of rider you want on your horse.  If it were an off-farm lease and basically the person was "owning" the horse, you might charge around 250 a month.  On farm would be different to cover boarding costs but off-farm generally means that the leasee pays for shoes, vet and board.  I would suggest checking out insurance for your horse though too.

    Hope I helped?

  2. You only charge to lease a horse when he is a top show horse

You can make them pay part board or all if your not riding him any more

Make sure you have them ride and make sure they have the money to be able to care for him

    This happens all the time

Get up a contract with them

and make they keep at where you keep him

Becarefull lots of Bad people out there
