Leasing my mare?

I have a mare who is very good. I know a girl who would love to lease her I am just concerned that something might happen to my mare. Its only a half lease but still. Is thier any way to make sure that all the grounds are covered. She is only paying 1/2 board.. I was thinking about asking for 1/2 of everything but I feel like that is my responsibility. She wants to lease my mare until she can buy a horse of her own and board it at my home. I am debating weather or not I should make it manditory that she take lessons on my horse iwth my instructor or not. Please help if you have ever half leased your horse.

  1. I've never leased out my horse but I've leased plenty of others, this is what most of owners did for me while I rode their horse.

What I would do is for the first however many times/rides you can go with her while she rides her horse and give her a few mini lessons until she gets the hang of your horse and everything.

Once you're comfortable you can probably let her go on her own and just go check up on her every few weeks while she's riding to make sure everything's going good.

I wouldn't go quite as far as making her take lessons with your instructor as it may get uncomfortable for her.

  2. I have never had luck with leasing but you could write down the things that are required and have her sign it.

  3. Yes I have half leased. I had the shareboarder pay half of everything, so they know what it is like to own a horse (but that is up to you). My shareboarder was 12 yrs old and she rode my 15yr old (arab/ quarter horse). If your shareboarder does take lessons it wouldn't hurt to use your horse for the lessons, that way the trainer can show her the right way to handle your horse. My shareboarder did take lessons with my horse and then rode 1-2 other days during the week.

When you decide on a shareboarder, have her test ride your horse. Watch her in the arena and see how your horse reacts to the cues she is giving her. If you think the girl might be too harsh on the mouth or is too timid, you may want to re-think having her shareboard.

  4. i wouldn't do it. if she's a beginner she'll ruin your horse.
