Hey everyone

So would it be possible to buy a real leather quilt or bedspread? I saw a question before and it intrigued me but no answers was given.

  1. I haven't seen any pre-made ones for sale, but if you're willing to come up with the $, and it would be very expensive, you could have one custom made.  It would be extremely heavy though, so it would have to be made by someone with industrial sewing equipment.  There are custom sewing shops all over the country.

  2. *****I have never seen one or heard of one.  As for a real leather quilt, it would be almost impossible to do.  Can you think how heavy it would be?  and how could a quilter (I'm one) handle anything this heavy?

It would be nice to behold, but not at all practical. . . . . maybe as a wall hanging. . . .

  3. I would go with a large crazy quilt type pattern and instead of doing seams, I would butt the edges together and whipstitch or serge. It would lie flat that way, I would also use a light, well tanned skin, deer might not be bad, it gets really soft. And definitely yes to fabric on the back, something sturdy like flannel or corderoy so the leather doesnt wear through. I'd try it, for a fee of course..........lol

  4. Well, it is possible. Thats a whole lot of leather.

    Couple things to consider.

    1. If you want it as seamless as possible, you will have to go with cowhide upholstery leather. Hides average about 55 ft sq. But this option is heavy.

    2. You can go with a garment leather which is lighter weight, but the hides are smaller and therefore you will need more of them, therefore more seams. But If it is made out of a nice goat or pig, it wouldn't be much heavier than a heavy down comforter.

    3. Personally, I would only do one side of it in leather, and the other side cloth. This is due to cost, plus leather is not comfortable to sleep in.

If I were to make one for one of my customers, I would charge about $800-$1200 for it. (For option 2) Over $1300, for option 1.

  5. One could be made.

    Go to http://tandyleatherfactory.com/

Find a store near you (from the store locator), and go in and talk to the people working there.
