Leather or textile/mesh jacket?

I'll be getting a sportbike 500-750cc soon. I really like the way the leather ones look, and dont care as much for the mesh ones (they dont look that comfortable either, but I wouldnt know). Yet, I'll be living in Florida in two months. Its going to be smokin hot down there most of the time. Also, I'm looking for as much protection (witih little cost to comfort/maneuverability) that I can get. I've got maybe a 200-300 dollar budget for a jacket.

  1. Gabe S, have you tried on a leather motorcycle jacket?!?!?

Leather will give you better protection in a fall and (I don't care what anybody says) it is heavier.  If your going to be in Florida with all that humidity you're going to sweat buckets in a leather jacket.  Get a mesh jacket, made by Joe Rocket or Alpinestar they still have the armor in them, you'll get more air flow and you'll be a lot more comfortable in it.

  2. Check newenough.com for low cost gear, too. I think I'd mesh in FL. They also make perf'ed leather.

I have a summer jacket that is leather and vented material combined that's reasonably cool.  Make sure to get (and wear) a well ventilated helmet!  The HJC AC11 has been my favorite for staying cool so far.

  3. im getting this jacket.. its a little out of ur budget but its a great jacket

  4. The mesh jackets are heavy when you actually try it on. filled with multiple jackets to hold all the pads and such to protect you but they run a hefty fee. leather ones are just as expensive if not more but dont have padding or anything, but do get a nice look. if you want protection id go with the mesh, but they do get kinda heavier than a normal leather jacket.

here are some low priced jackets. google it up

  5. I live in AR, and just purchased a mesh jacket complete with shoulder, elbow, and back body armor.  The mesh will let the air flow through so you don't pass out from heat exhaustion.  Perf leather is also great from what I hear, but also pricey.  I joined a forum for the type of bike I ride, and the ppl were very helpful about what type of gear to get.
