Question:

Leaving for USMC Basic training in 2 weeks...Any advice is a great help!

I'm leaving for basic in about 2 weeks. My ship date was actually supposed to be tomorrow, the 11th, but for some reason it was pushed back. I took this as a great opportunity to get in shape and get myself mentally, physically, and emotionally more prepared then I would have been.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

And FYI - just in case someone would like to know, I can just meet all IST requirements.

Thanks

  1. Best of luck.  Pay attention, do as your told, don't volunteer for anything, try and blend in.  It's a mind game and you will come out the better person for it.  They know what they are doing, trust them.

  2. What was said above is absolutely correct.  Instant willing obedience to all orders will be your key to success not just in boot camp, but in the fleet as well.  Try and memorize your general orders before you get there.  Don't forget it is only temporary, it is all a head game, and was actually fairly easy for me. You'll be fine if you keep your mouth shut and do what you're told.

  3. Get in the best shape you can, run, do push ups, pull ups, sit ups.  LOL, watch Full Metal Jacket.  Get your FEET in shape for road marches, toughen up the soles and heels, wear some similar boots if you have them and WALK so that you will be less prone to blisters.

  4. Don't drop the soap.

  5. Do what you are told.  Sounds stupid, but you'll be told to do stuff that makes absolutely no sense to you.  If you do anything to show you think it's dumb, you'll be asking for problems.

The mental and emotional parts are the worst.

Unless you want to either be the punching bag or a leader, don't draw attention to yourself.

Nothing with the drill instructors is personal.  You are just another recruit.  Oh, it will sound personal, but it isn't.  They don't have time or inclination to know the recruits they're training.

Do your best.  The more you put into it, the more you'll get out of it.  Trite, but true.

Good luck and thanks for serving your country!
