I'm leaving in 2 weeks..what should I pack? We will be staying in south..Saigon, Long Tan and Ben Tre. What is the weather like? Skirts or shorts ok? Should I take jeans and tennis shoes or flip-flops? capris? I know it will be hot and don't want to violate any modesty dress codes. What about toiletries? Toilet paper? We won't be staying in a hotel the whole time, will be with relatives in the Mekong Delta region. Any absolute necessities besides insect repellent?

  1. It's quite warm there this time of year, so for sure light cotton material clothing would be a must. Remember it may get a little cool in the evenings so it wouldn't hurt just to pack something that's a little heavier with long sleeves to keep the mosquitos at bay.

Bring some medicines for anti-diarrhoea and stomach cramps, maybe some water purification tablets as well. Panadol is a must! Bring a good hat to keep the sun off, and some sunburn cream as well.

As far as clothes are concerned, people outside Sai Gon tend to dress a bit more modestly, so long pants instead of skirts, unless you want all the guys to be looking at you. You may end up riding on a few scooters as well, so dress comfortably for that too. You should be able to buy toiletries in Sai Gon before you head out to the delta region.

Most of all, take your cues from your family members and you'll fit in fine. Enjoy your time :)

  2. Dress conservative. Capri's and nice shorts are good to wear. Tennis shoes are great for walking, flip flops, unless you are really used to them, aren't.  No support.

You can buy toilet paper over there; but it is rough.  Wouldn't hurt if you could pack a couple rolls.  I'd take deodorant and for a gal some perfume and your other necessities.  Most everything can be bought in the larger cities.

Have a great time, enjoy your relatives and culture.  Cheers

  3. take it from this tour guide!

Suncream, unless u want a tan

Insect repellent (cause our skin is a battle field)

Comfy light clothings (in temple...tanktops and short shorts are not acceptable, besure to cover ur skin, at leats crop pants, although people in the South are not as strict as people up North, but some elderly can be picky) And i think skirt won't be so convenient if you do a lot of boating.

Sandals will be great, but the road could be very dusty, flip flops are fine too.

Toilet tissue, u can buy in Vietnam, they're evrywhere (in the store), some babywipes might come in handy, i always have a pack of babywipes with me on tour.

some tylenol, and maybe pepto bis mol will do you good.

    i think that's it. u hav a good trip

  4. all of the stuff you mentioned is fine , jeans are very popular and acceptable wear almost everywhere[, although i dont know why , [ they are so hot !] shorts are tricky many people wear them and NO ONE in viet nam will ever embarass you by calling you on a "dress code" but it technicaly in impolite to visit in shorts and "t" shirt. unless you are in the deap countryside or a very large person you will be able to get all you need there cheaply. so travel light.  i always bring antibotics and cold medicine just in case .. and i almost always use it... yes carry toilet paper pen and small notebook everywhere you go.  di choi vui ve , ong jon ....oh the me kong should be hot and humid... sunglasses..imodeium, dramamine.

  5. As you know temperature in Vietnam (VN) is around 100 degrees with the humidity over 70%; therfore light cloth is best for you, jean is OK at Saigon city; however if you travel to the south as Ben Tre, jean may not popular in there and you do not want people look at you as a Martian. In order to avoid pick pockets and jerks, you may wear Vietnamese cloths which does not have any fantasy which will help you avoid the eyes of bad person. Tennis shoes is the best for you to travel around VN, but do not bring with you many shoes, because shoes is at very low price in VN. You may buy a 200 dollar shoes at $40. Mosquitoes is every where in VN and they like to bite American (Vietnamese people used to with mosquito bites, therefore they did not get any red or swollen). Therefore any anti-insect bite cream should be apply on your skin at night when go out. Do not forget some anti-diarrhea with you on your trip. Toilet paper is not free in VN; therfore put in your pocket some toilet paper anytime you go out. Good luck and have a nice trip

  6. All are ok... Because the weather in south is always very hot ~~'

Wear what u like;  n Toilet paper... U know that it isn't important so much n everywhere in VN also has... Even your hotel... Sure that its quality is good :)>-

Nothing to worry :-j VN is not a cheap country like someone thought... or always thinks... So nothing to get ready without ur personal tools... enjoy your vacation in VN!

  7. Sunblock is a must if you really look after your skin.Bring US dollars with you. They will come in handy.
