Leaving home at 16 in the UK ?

A friend of a friend is 16 & planning on leaving home soon. She has already made living arrangements with other people but said that her mum threatened that if she left home she would call the police for them to find her & bring her back. I always assumed that at 16 years old you could move out...& even if you don't have parental consent, if you don't want to go back home then the police can't make you.

Does anybody know the laws on 16 year olds leaving home in the UK without parental consent?
