Question:

Leaving my job, colleagues asking where I am going to work?

I'm leaving my current employer after a 10 month contract there. Some of the people I work with have asked where I'm going and I've only told one person. It's pretty obvious I'm not going to be there because my name is not on the schedule next term (I work at a university).

I have received a job offer and do indeed know where I will be working starting in September, however I really don't want anyone to know.

Part of the reason is that I've had somewhat of a bad experience at this place. We are provided housing by the university and the first four months we had several problems that weren't addressed. Also I am "loaned" out to another department for some of my work and very much despise how I've been treated by that department.

What do you think I should do next time it's brought up?

  1. Just say very politely "it is really kind of personal, so I would rather not discuss it. I hope you understand"

If they are offended then it is their problem, not yours.  You were polite, and answered their question in a very polite manner.

I do understand you, and somethings are easier said than done, but don't lose any sleep over it.

Have a happy life, and always follow your gut in anything you undertake.

Edit:  I would not make up any false story, as you never know when you might bump into one of your colleagues in the near future.

  2. Tell them you haven't got a new  job yet.

  3. Simple, just tell them that you're going out on your own to do something that you've always wanted to do, and then keep a low profile for a couple of months until you're forgotten.

  4. Tell them you're going to be freelancing from home for a while.

    Or that you're going travelling.

Or just having a break from work for a few months.

  5. Just tell them you don't know where you'll be working yet, or you're going to take some time off before going back to work.
