Question:

Leaving the oven on when you have to go out for 10 minutes?

I had an arguement with my wife, who refused to go across the road to the shop because she had just put dinner in the oven. The oven is only 3 years old, and having seen for myself the way in which it is wired internally (thin wires, double insulated in steel encasement) & correct installation & correct operation, "non-flammable" food inside. What are the real chances of it catching fire.

Has anyone actually seen a modern electric oven catch fire?

  1. always expect the unexpected and always be prepared for the worst...

never never leave your appliances on and working while your out..

the chances of a fire no matter how old they are are more likely then if you were to stay home and mind it.

if you stay home you have a better chance of putting it out as you are there so it doesn't have time to get out of control.

so please don't be mad at your wife . she is only doing the right thing...

so why couldn't you go to the market for her or stay home and mind the cooking while she went??? mmmmmmmmmmmmmm

    well mmmmmmmmmmmmm

    cheers

  2. I usually try to stay home when the ovens on, but if I need to run out for a few minutes, I will. The oven is still new and from what you said wired correctly, so there shouldn't be any problems. I wouldn't think the chances are too high.

  3. Interesting question really. You were trying to make her do the run across the road to the shop because you didn't want to go. She's using an excuse ( I've just put the dinner in the oven)  to get out of going. No winners there. She knows the food is safe. She knows she can turn it down or off for 10 minutes. Now go to the shop. You didn't put dinner in the oven, after all.

  4. If a fire should occur & be worse than it might have been because the house was left empty that could be construed as negligence & your insurance company would, rightly, probably not pay up

  5. well i wud say it wud be alrite if u can garuntee you will be bac very quickly-u say go out for ten mins but how do u know that something wont happen to delay you.

cud be a bit risky. wud be safer to just turn it back out and put on as soon as u get home again

  6. your wife is simply playing it safe, but there generally is nothing to worry about.  I do this quite often with things that take hours to cook (like ribs) knowing that the oven "might" catch fire but the chances of that are slim to none.  The oven can't tell that it's being watched.
