Is there any kind of etiquette for leaving the table for a restroom break, make a phone call, etc. Should you bring your chips with you when you leave and are planning on coming back?

  1. Not at a casino (a home game is a different story).

In a Casino just get up and leave and leave your chips on the table and if you missed some blind(s) the dealer will place a "missed blind" button in your spot and you will have to pay the blind(s) when you come back.

If it is a busy night your leaving will have a set time limit to it. Usually about 30 minutes depending on the casino and how busy they are.

If you are going to be gone for more than a few minutes it is better to take your chips and leave and then get another table later because otherwise you will end up paying a lot in blinds for no real reason.

Usually getting up to use the bath room, smoke a cig, make a quick phone call, have a quick bite to eat are all fine.

  2. Everyone answered correctly...

just wanted to add that if you are in a tournament and leave the table with your chips (to go to the restroom, smoke, etc)...you will be automatically disqualifed from the tournament...you must always leave your chips on the table...if you did this in a cash game then you would be giving up your seat and a new player can sit there...best thing to do is just tell the dealer "you'll be back."

  3. If you are planning on comming back leave your chips at your spot. Ask the dealer to put down a marker resembling that the spot is being held and politely excuse yourself as you would if you were getting up from a dinner with friends. When you come back wait until the next hand before joining back in.

  4. tournaments usually have breaks every hour, people are usually expected to wait until then.

if you can't wait or are called for an emergency, the dealer will take blinds and antes automatically.

  5. You can get up, take a p**s, make a call, grab a bite, all at your convenience.  Just leave your chips and notify the dealer you will be returning.  The only thing you may need to due is post blinds if you were gone for an extended period.
