Question:

Leaving things on standby?

I have no choice but to leave the sky box and the stereo on standby, as they were made that way (neither have options to turn them off fully, and unplugging them would knock the channels out on sky). Is it just as bad as leaving say, the TV on standby? (which I don't do).

  1. Modern televisions (except the cheaper ones) use about 10% or less of their power when on standby. The person who said 1/3 either has a very inefficient set or is guessing.

If you're leaving your house for more than a couple of days it's worth unplugging the Sky box and video/dvd recorder (unless you intend to record a pre-set programme). The few minutes that they take to recover their programming and set the clocks is a small inconvenience compared to the total power that you'll have saved.

  2. And what is your question are you asking do we all do it then probably yes as we are all probably caught in the same trap as you. There must be a way of installing a battery in the device so that when power is turned off at the wall the battery comes into action and powers the device so you don't lose what is in the memory of the device. For example you don't lose your TV channels. The battery could be recharged during normal operation of the device.

  3. TVS ON STAND BY USE A THIRD OF THE POWER

SKY BOXES AND VIDEOS USE FAR LESS

  4. Electronic devices on standby still use power although not as much power as when the device is fully powered on. A sky box SHOULDN'T use that much power when on standby :)
